Wildcard Tournaments

That's right, folks! The last week of the season is upon us and that means it's time to put up or shut up! There's one regular event left on Sunday, followed by wildcard events on Monday and Wednesday (next Thursday's event will be the start of our new season, The Dog Days). Let's rehash the details for you:

Wildcard #1: Monday, April 28th at Brown Barrel

Wildcard #2: Wednesday, April 30th at Carrigan Arms

A wildcard spot can be earned by the player who meets all of the following requirements:

  • has 8 appearances by the end of the season

  • is outside the top 62 (including any points earned in wildcard events)

  • makes the final table of a wildcard event

  • lasts longer than any other wildcard hopefuls

You don't need to win, but it won't be a walk in the park! By my count, 43 of you are still in the running for a wildcard entry to the championship. So, bring your A-game on Monday and Wednesday! If no one meets all the criteria, the 63rd-place player will snag an invite, and the 64th-place player will also get a shot if neither night yields a wildcard. Did I mention we'll be drawing for tables on both wildcard events? Don't get too comfy before I get there and good luck!

Player Eligibility

It's time for a friendly reminder about how Dead Man's Hand Poker operates. Venues pay me for each customer who comes to play poker—emphasis on "customer." If a player doesn't spend any money, they're not considered a customer, and the venue can withhold my payment. It's no secret that everyone attending is expected to spend a minimum of $10 on food or drinks. This is clearly outlined in the Player Info Sheet, sent to all new players and available on the website:

Plus, there's a weekly reminder at the bottom of the newsletter:

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a big ask. You wouldn’t sit at a restaurant table for three hours watching a game without ordering anything—they’d kick you out. Poker’s no different. Normally, this isn’t an issue. Before this week, I can only recall a couple of cases in recent months, and I usually handle it quietly with the individual. Problem solved. But this week, it happened four times. To top it off, the server couldn’t recall three of the offenders’ names, so I can’t even address them directly.

Full disclosure: if the restaurant still paid me for a non-spender, I wouldn’t bat an eye. It’s happened before, and I didn’t say a word. But when my payment gets docked, it stings. I love running these tournaments—it’s a passion—but it’s also a business for me and the venues. The money I collect funds prizes and other expenses. When someone doesn’t spend and I don’t get paid, I’m essentially working for free.

Spending $10 isn’t tough. Even if you don’t drink alcohol, both venues have full menus. You could also buy a drink for someone else (maybe trade for one of their reward cards?). Just note: a drink someone buys you counts toward their bill, not yours—you still need to hit $10.

Many of you go above and beyond, spending $20+ to snag a reward card, and the venues and I appreciate it. But spending big one night doesn’t give you a free pass later. If you want a deal like that, work it out with the restaurant. All I care about is what the server tells me: if you didn’t spend and I’m not getting paid, no deal matters.

So please, help me out—spend a simple $10 to play. As the Player Info Sheet states, non-spenders won’t earn points, and repeat offenders may be asked not to return. Let’s keep this fun for everyone!
